Fort Worth, October 26, 2017 – Competitive Carriers Association (CCA) today announced the winners of the 2017 Annual Achievement Awards, which honor individuals and companies for contributions to the industry and community in the following categories: Outstanding Achievement, Outstanding Service, Industry Innovation, and the Neko Hamlett Associate Member of the Year. The winners were honored at an award ceremony during CCA’s Annual Convention at the Fort Worth Convention Center, October 25-27.
“This year’s Annual Achievement Award winners demonstrate CCA members’ commitment to competitive policies, technology innovation, and community involvement,” said Steven K. Berry, CCA’s president and CEO. “Congratulations to all the winners who inspire us with their spirit and continued support of the competitive carrier ecosystem.”
The winners of CCA’s 2017 Annual Achievement Awards include:
Outstanding Achievement Award – two awardees
Ben Moncrief, VP, Government Relations, C Spire
Grant Spellmeyer, VP, Federal Affairs and Public Policy, U.S. Cellular
Ben and Grant were honored for their respective advocacy work surrounding the USF/Mobility Fund II issue. Each spent countless hours working with CCA, the FCC, Congress, and policymakers to stress the importance of the program and to ensure competitive carriers have access to these critical funds.
Neko Hamlett Associate Member of the Year Award
Devon Jay, Marketing Events Manager, Ericsson
Devon has worked diligently on the CCA Events Committee helping to create interesting, dynamic sessions and recruit speakers. This year, she helped develop CCA’s Mobile Minute studio in the exhibit hall to help generate excitement and add to the overall attendee experience.
Outstanding Service Award (Carrier) – two awardees
Cellular One conducted the Naked Mobile Scholarship Challenge on five college campuses to help deserving local students pay for school and cover their mobile needs. Winners received a total of almost $10,000 in prizes and scholarship funds to be applied to their course tuition, fees and books for the 2017-2018 academic year.
Sprint organized the 1Million Project, a multiyear initiative, to help one million high school students who lack Internet access at home. The project offered free mobile devices and free wireless service (up to four years) to low income students across the U.S.
Outstanding Service Award (Associate)
BEC Technologies and United Wireless teamed up to offer the Dodge City, Kansas school district an opportunity to extend the classroom environment to their fleet of school buses. United Wireless provided 4G LTE service and BEC Technologies provided MX-1000 technology, creating not only a safe learning space but also a school bus GPS tracking capability for administrators and parents.
Industry Innovation Award (Carrier)
GCI worked with the Federal Aviation Administration on a program to get real-time weather-cam information to pilots using their wireless network for backhaul. The program has reduced weather-related aviation incidents in Alaska by 85 percent, and has reduced the number of instances pilots must change course due to weather by 66 percent.
Industry Innovation Award (Associate)
